Membership

Thank you for your interest in our Society, a read through our website will outline the principle activities and aims of MSAS, including maps and information about how to get to the Sherwood Observatory.

We hold monthly members-only lecture meetings at the Observatory, along with a number of other observing and training evenings for society members.

There is invariably someone at the Observatory on Sunday mornings and Monday evenings should you wish to talk to anyone about the Society.

Membership of the Society is limited by the size of the Observatory and unfortunately at the moment our membership list is closed. If you are interested in joining the Society please contact us at the end of March, when we will know how many places have become available, to request an application form which will need to be completed and returned to the Observatory for approval at the earliest committee meeting.

Subscription rates are £40.00 for senior members, and are charged pro rata according to when you join during the Society's financial year, which runs from April to March. There is also a one-off £10.00 administration fee required, payable by all new members.

Unfortunately we can only accept members below the age of 16 as part of a family group since the child protection policies that the society have been forced to put in place no longer permit members below the age of 16 unless they are always accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times.

Once a member has been with the society for a full year, they may choose to be trained in the use of the societys' telescopes (see the telescope training page for more information). After a member has successfully completed the training course to the required standard, they may apply for a swipe-card which enables access through the Observatory security system, and enables full access to the telescope(s) the member has been train to use. The swipe card costs £5.00, which is refundable on termination of membership if the card is returned.

At the end of March application forms can be obtained by contacting the Observatory or emailing the Secretary.
